Traditional Kandyan lacquer work (Laksha) centers on two techniques: spool-turned work (Pattal weda) and fingernail-drawn filigree (Niyapothu weda). Artisans harvest natural sticklac excreted by the Kerria lacca scale insect onto host trees like Masan (Ziziphus mauritiana) or Kon (Schleichera oleosa). The crude resin is purified, dyed using mineral vermilion or orpiment, and worked into elastic sticks over charcoal embers. On a hand-powered bow-lathe, the resin stick is pressed against the revolving timber piece; mechanical friction heats and melts the shellac into the wood pores, followed immediately by rubbing with dry leaves of the Talipot palm (Corypha umbraculifera) to achieve a glass-like waterproof finish without chemical urethanes.
