If you are very short on time you should absolutely prioritize Galle Fort. It is vastly larger beautifully restored and packed with incredible boutique cafes museums and perfectly maintained colonial architecture.

Matara Fort is very small and functions more like a quiet local village. It lacks the commercial tourist appeal of Galle. However the Star Fort in Matara is a brilliant quick stop if you love military history but Galle remains the mandatory highlight.
