Midigama vs Ahangama reef breaks: swell direction and board selection November-April?
4 Answers from travellers
Rams Right is a fast, heavy, shallow shelf wave requiring standard 4+4x4oz glassing minimum, while Midigama’s Lazy Left provides a mellow, rolling shoulder forgiving to lighter competition boards. Southwest groundswells with periods above 14 seconds light up Kabalana’s The Rock and Rams, while Lazy Left handles low-to-mid tide transitions cleanly without closing out.
Booties are usually frowned upon by locals, but Rams has urchin clusters right inside the keyhole exit. Missing the paddle-in channel at low tide guarantees reef cuts.
Mid-morning offshore winds reliably flip onshore around 11:30 AM along the Ahangama stretch. Hit the dawn patrol between 6:00 AM and 9:00 AM for clean conditions.
Keep distance from the traditional stilt fishing wooden poles planted along the shallows between Midigama and Ahangama; snagging leashes on submerged timber is a recurring hazard.
