Yes, unforgettable. Mihintale (12km east of Anuradhapura) is where monk Mahinda converted King Devanampiya Tissa in 247 BCE — origin of Buddhism in Sri Lanka. Climb of ~1840 steps to the summit stupa. Sunset from Aradhana Gala rock is one of Sri Lanka's spiritual highlights. Free entry, but foreign entry USD 15 to the main site.

Start climb by 4:30 PM for sunset. Wear white if possible (respectful), cover shoulders and knees, bare feet in the inner shrine zones. Poson Poya (June) is the big pilgrimage here — extraordinary but very crowded. Save Mihintale for a non-Poya day for photography.
