During the seasonal Gathering at Minneriya National Park (August to October), up to 300 Asian Elephants (Elephas maximus) assemble on the exposed lakebed. The social structure is strictly matriarchal. Multiple related family units (each led by an elder matriarch) aggregate into super-herds. Matriarchs maintain spatial coordination using infrasonic rumbles (14 to 24 Hz). Related females practice allomothering (communal nursing and babysitting), forming protective circular defensive rings around newborn calves when safari jeeps approach. Adult bulls live solitary lives on the periphery, entering the herd temporarily only when cows are in estrus.
Bulls in musth (exhibiting high testosterone and oily temporal gland secretions) display aggressive posturing; drivers must keep jeeps at least 30 meters away.
When rainstorms fill the reservoir basin, the super-herd fragments back into smaller 10-to-15 member family units that disperse across dry-zone forest corridors.
Observing calves play in reservoir mud baths and practice trunk coordination is a highlight of afternoon safaris between 3:30 PM and 5:30 PM.
