Mirissa beach erosion and sandbag walls is the beach still nice in 2026
I see photos of sandbag walls along Mirissa beach and stories about coastal erosion eating into the south coast Is the beach still usable Where are the best preserved sandy stretches and is this hurricane related or year round

Real and ongoing. The southwest monsoon every year strips sand off the south coast and brings it back in the calmer season; 2025-2026 has been particularly bad because of compound storm activity and the cumulative effects of sea-level rise. Some Mirissa beachfront restaurants installed sandbag walls and concrete revetments to protect their buildings during the worst surges. State of play: the main horseshoe of Mirissa beach is still usable and beautiful in the calmer Nov-Apr window; in May-Sept the sand shrinks dramatically and the rough water makes swimming dangerous anyway. Better-preserved south-coast stretches in 2026: Hiriketiya bay (the rocky horseshoe shape protects sand naturally), Talalla, the eastern end of Tangalle, and Polhena (reef protection). Western parts of Unawatuna and stretches of Hikkaduwa have seen the worst erosion. Check current conditions with your guesthouse 2-3 days before arrival; status changes monthly.
Pivoting to Hiriketiya for the beach base. Gracias!
Stayed in Hiriketiya last month. Beach was full, swimmable, and the bay shape clearly protects it. South coast first-timers should try there over Mirissa.
Some hotels have shifted their sunbed setups onto their lawns/decks during high-erosion weeks. Ask before booking a beachfront room expecting "step onto sand" - the step may be onto sandbags right now.
