Sunday 30 Aug, 5am, harbour. Desk said sightings are likely. I have read enough to know likely is not a contract. Partner is already putting on the life vest. We can sit and drink tea. We can also be the boat that comes back with a story and no whale.

Drink the tea. No whale is promised on a Sunday in late August, or any morning. The harbour is a working morning. If you go, you go for the sea, not a guarantee. I will not invent a sighting fee or a refund. If the swell looks ugly from the wall, sit.

We drank tea two mornings, went the third because the sea looked ordinary. Saw a fin, maybe. The tea was honest.

Pride waits at the rail for a guarantee and then writes a bad review about biology.

If a cousin quotes a number that feels like a tour for a maybe, walk back to the guesthouse kettle.

We skipped. Slept. The island did not collapse.
