The reef break outside Mirissa Harbour wall requires strong southwest groundswells (14s+ period) to wrap around the concrete breakwater. The wave is a fast, bowling right that runs over a sharp, shallow reef table. The main hazard is multi-day commercial trawlers and whale-watching catamarans transiting the harbor navigation channel 30 meters from the take-off peak. Surfers must yield right-of-way to commercial vessels; paddling across the active marked boat channel during peak morning vessel departures (5:30 AM to 7:00 AM) is illegal and perilous.
The inside wave section ends in a shallow dry reef boil called the "Keyhole"; kick out before the wave hits the concrete breakwater riprap.
Diesel exhaust and bilge water slicks can coat the wave face during high-traffic mornings; check water clarity before paddling out.
Paddle out from the sandy bay corner behind the breakwater rather than attempting to jump off slippery harbor concrete blocks.
