Secret Beach is a secluded pocket cove tucked behind the western headland of Mirissa. Reached via a narrow, extremely steep 1.5km dirt and concrete road, standard cars cannot navigate the ruts; hire an experienced local three-wheeler or walk 20 minutes from the main Matara road. The beach divides into two coves: Blue Lagoon (a calm natural pool sheltered by a circular sandstone and dead coral barrier) and Shelly Beach. Swimmers in the lagoon must wear water shoes, as rock crevices shelter sharp colonies of long-spined black sea urchins (Diadema setosum).
Outside the protective rock barrier, strong ocean undertows pull seaward; stay strictly within the enclosed lagoon pool during high surf sets.
A small cliffside beach bar rents snorkel masks and daybeds, offering chilled coconuts overlooking the breaking point.
