I want to get eye level shots of the massive Mugger crocodiles basking on the mudflats in Bundala. Will the jeep drivers allow us to position the vehicle low near the banks, or is that too dangerous.

You are strictly forbidden from leaving the jeep anywhere in the park, especially near the lagoon banks where Muggers ambush prey. The drivers will position the jeep on the tracks as best they can, but you will not be allowed to lie on the ground for an eye-level perspective. You will need a good telephoto lens (400mm to 600mm) and shoot from the vehicle window or the open roof.

That makes sense. Do they bask more in the morning sun or late afternoon near the Malala lagoon.

If you bring a beanbag, you can rest your heavy lens on the side door of the jeep. It gives you the lowest possible angle without breaking park safety rules.

The early morning is best. By midday, the heat in Bundala is unbearable and the crocs slide back into the murky water to cool off.
