Tourism tech consultant, my definitive 2026 list. ESSENTIAL: (1) PickMe - dominant local rideshare, tuk-tuks and cars, works nationwide including Jaffna and Trincomalee. (2) Uber - Colombo and south coast only, useful as PickMe backup. (3) Google Maps with offline maps downloaded for each region you visit (data can be patchy in the hills). (4) WhatsApp - universal communication with hosts and drivers, everyone uses it. (5) MyDialog / MoMobile - manage your local SIM data package, top up, check balance. (6) Sri Lanka Railways ticket app (seatreservation.railway.gov.lk) - book train seats 30 days ahead. (7) Weather - your default plus Windy for surf/wind. VERY USEFUL: Ada Derana news, XE currency converter, Booking.com, Airalo (eSIM). NICHE-USEFUL: Pekoe Trail app (offline trail maps for hikers), RefillMyBottle (water refill points), Trailforks (mountain biking). SKIP: crypto-to-rupee apps, Colombo-specific "insider guides" that are mostly ads.
Downloading the essential six tonight and pre-registering PickMe. Emergency numbers saved. Grazie!
Google Translate is genuinely useful for Sinhala and Tamil - camera translate mode works well for menus and signs. Duolingo has a basic Sinhala module now (2026 addition); enough to learn 10 essential phrases in a few days.
A specific tip: install PickMe and REGISTER before you fly, using your home number via WhatsApp verification. The airport data queue for signup is annoying; do it in advance and it works the moment you land.
For emergencies, save these numbers in your phone: 119 (police), 110 (ambulance), 1929 (tourist police hotline). Not apps but critical. The Suwaseriya ambulance service is free and reasonably fast in cities.
