Muthurajawela ("Swamp of Royal Treasure") is a coastal tidal peat bog formed over mid-Holocene sea-level retreats. The subsoil consists of spongy, waterlogged organic peat extending up to 6 meters deep, characterized by iron sulfides (pyrite). When land drainage exposes these soils to air, pyrite oxidizes into sulfuric acid, dropping groundwater pH to highly corrosive levels (3.5-4.5). Structural engineers building foundation piles must specify sulfate-resistant Portland cement (SRPC), dense polymer-coated epoxy rebar, or use treated timber piles driven down to deep bed-gneiss to prevent concrete deterioration and structural settling.
