My tour company is pushing a 3-night 'Cultural Triangle' package. Do I actually need 3 nights?

They keep saying 3 nights minimum to 'do it right'. I only have 8 total and want beach time. Can I do Sigiriya + Dambulla in like 2 nights and skip the rest?

You can absolutely do it in 2 nights. Their package pads with things you don't need. Realistic: arrive afternoon day 1, sunset Pidurangala (opposite Sigiriya, better view of the rock). Day 2 sunrise Sigiriya climb, afternoon Dambulla caves. Depart day 3. That's the highlights. Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa are separate additional days if you're a history person - if you're not, you won't miss them.

Cutting it to 2 nights and taking that extra night for Mirissa. Feel less scammed already.

Agent margin, that's why. 3 nights = more room rate for them. 2 nights is standard for the Sigiriya-Dambulla combo. If you're not a ruins/history nerd, don't add Polonnaruwa. Beach time > another ancient city.
