Colorless natural topaz is routinely irradiated in nuclear reactors (fast neutron bombardment) or linear accelerators (electron beams) to generate deep "London Blue" or "Swiss Blue" colors. Nuclear reactor irradiation induces secondary radioactivity through isotopic activation of trace impurities (such as Ta-182, Sc-46, and Fe-59). The Atomic Energy Regulatory Council of Sri Lanka and NGJA require gamma spectroscopy testing on all imported parcels using High-Purity Germanium (HPGe) detectors. Stones must decay in bonded holding vaults until residual activity drops below the international statutory release clearance limit of 74 Bq/g.
