Water quality in Negombo Lagoon varies significantly by zone. The southern basin—impacted by municipal sewage discharge, boat repair yards, and industrial runoff via the Dandugam Oya—regularly shows elevated fecal coliform levels and trace heavy metals, making open-water swimming inadvisable. However, the northern channels near the Dutch Canal outlet and the secluded mangrove patches of Kadolkele present better water exchange with outgoing ocean tides. Kayakers should stick to the northern wetland fringes and rinse with fresh water immediately after paddling.
Avoid paddling in the lagoon during low tide; exposed mudflats release hydrogen sulfide gas from decaying organic sediment and slow progress.
The Kadolkele Mangrove Information Centre provides educational boardwalk access for observing five true mangrove species without wading through contaminated mud.
