The Negombo Lellama (seaside fish market) operates at peak auction activity between 5:30 AM and 7:30 AM as multi-day trawlers and traditional oru outriggers beach their night catches. Bidding proceeds in rapid Sinhala chants over tuna, sailfish, rays, and cuttlefish. Along the open sand dunes, hundreds of women spread small silver sprats and sardines over massive coir net drying beds, salting and drying them into dried fish (Karawala). Department of Fisheries inspectors monitor landings to enforce strict national bans on landing oceanic whitetip, thresher, and hammerhead sharks.
Wear closed waterproof footwear; market floors are wet with sea brine and fish slime, making flip-flops slippery and unhygienic.
