Newspaper first, then the AC if you have extra pages. Open them wide. Do not bag them wet.

We did both. Paper in the toe, shoes facing the AC on a towel. Wearable by breakfast.

No newspaper? Toilet paper loosely, then the rail. Hairdryer heat now is how you crack the sole.
