We want to do the night walk at Pophams Arboretum to spot the rare Gray Slender Loris. What is the history of this forest, and do we need special red light torches to protect their eyes.

Pophams Arboretum was created by an Englishman, Sam Popham, in 1963. He bought scrub jungle and carefully allowed the native valuable timber trees, like Ebony and Satinwood, to naturally regenerate. Today, it is an ecological sanctuary. You absolutely must use red-light torches for the night safari. White light temporarily blinds the nocturnal Slender Loris and ruins their ability to hunt insects.

The guides provide the proper red light torches when you arrive, so you do not need to buy your own. You will also likely see civet cats and pangolins if you are quiet enough.

Just a warning, Dambulla does not really have a party scene. After your night walk in the dark jungle, expect to head back to your hotel for a quiet beer. It is a strictly historical and nature focused town.
