The Nine Arch Bridge (Ahas Namaye Palama) at Demodara spans a 300-foot gorge on a 10-degree curve. Built during World War I when British steel supplies were diverted to European war efforts, local builder P.K. Appuhami and railway engineers constructed the entire viaduct of hand-cut granite stone blocks and kiln-fired clay bricks bonded with hydraulic lime-cement mortar without a single piece of structural reinforcing steel. The nine semi-circular arches function strictly in compression: the dead weight of the masonry and dynamic loads of passing broad-gauge trains are transferred downward along catenary thrust lines into massive stone piers anchored into valley bedrock.
