Sinking deep artisanal gem shafts (Pathal) through saturated river terrace sands in Nivithigala requires specialized hydraulic stabilization. As miners excavate downward, they install rectangular horizontal frames of rough-sawn timber (Atta). Behind these timber frames, workers pack thick, tightly compressed bundles of wild Kekilla fern fronds (Dicranopteris linearis). The tough, springy, water-resistant fern leaves form a natural geotextile filter: groundwater seeps freely through the fern barrier into the shaft sump where pumps clear it, but fine running sand particles are held back, preventing soil liquefaction and shaft collapses.
