We want to host outdoor Tibetan singing bowl and large gong baths at our villa in Weligama after 10 PM. Are there strict noise control laws in residential areas for acoustic instruments.

Yes, Sri Lanka has strict noise pollution regulations. In residential and mixed zones, noise levels should not exceed 45 decibels after 10:00 PM. Large gongs carry incredibly far and can easily breach this limit. You would technically need a police permit for loud outdoor events. It is best to host these sessions indoors with closed windows if you plan to go past 9:00 PM.

Most local neighbors are tolerant up to a point, but if you keep them awake with booming gongs every night, they will complain to the tourist police, who will come and shut you down.

Sound baths are supposed to be deeply relaxing. If you are playing the gongs loud enough to trigger municipal noise complaints from the neighbors, you are probably playing them way too hard anyway!
