Lovers Leap waterfall (elevation 1,900m) cascades 30 meters over an exposed granite-gneiss cliff along the southern shoulder of Pidurutalagala, Sri Lanka's highest peak. Formed by vertical faulting along the Nuwara Eliya mountain plateau, the icy mountain stream drains pure catchment water through montane cloud forest. The stream feeds directly into the irrigation canals of Pedro Tea Estate below. The continuous cool spray and localized cold air drainage create a high-humidity microclimate with frequent morning frost, slowing tea bush leaf growth and concentrating natural catechins.
The trail to the falls begins at the Pedro Tea Factory gate, winding 2km through village vegetable plots and tea terraces to a concrete viewing platform.
Highland estates like Pedro manufacture light-liquored orthodox black teas, celebrated for a pale amber cup and natural floral notes.
Local legend names the waterfall after a Kandyan royal prince who leaped from the rocky precipice with his lover when forbidden to marry.
