Victoria Park in the heart of Nuwara Eliya (elevation 1,880m) is celebrated as one of Asia’s premier urban birdwatching locations. Established in Victoria’s honor in 1897, the park features manicured lawns, stream channels, and dense exotic tree plantations. Between October and April, the park attracts rare Himalayan migratory species escaping freezing northern winters. Birdwatchers congregate along the stream banks and flower beds to spot the elusive Pied Thrush (Geokichla wardii), Kashmir Flycatcher (Ficedula subrubra), and Indian Blue Robin foraging among leaf litter.
Endemic highland species like the Yellow-fronted Barbet, Sri Lanka White-eye, and Dull-blue Flycatcher are resident year-round.
Park entry gates charge a nominal admission fee (approx. 500 LKR); early morning hours (6:30 AM to 8:30 AM) offer peak avian feeding activity.
