Because cold air is denser than warm air, heavy chilled air drains down steep mountain slopes and collects in low-lying valley bottoms and golf course hollows—a meteorological process known as cold air ponding. While tea terraces on slopes 50 meters above stay at 8°C, valley ground temperatures drop to -2°C, freezing dew droplets into crystalline white hoarfrost that burns young potato leaves and carrot shoots.
