Offering food to monks, known as giving alms, is a deeply beautiful Buddhist tradition. If you wish to participate, ask your guesthouse owner to help you prepare a small offering of fresh fruit or cooked rice early in the morning. When the monk approaches with his alms bowl, remove your shoes, respectfully place the food directly into the bowl with both hands, and bow slightly with your hands pressed together. It is an act of deep merit and is highly respected by the local community.
