We have a 4x4 and want to drive through the Manalkadu Sand Dunes near Point Pedro. Is it legal to offroad there, and are there good spots to park up on the secluded beach for a sunset party.

The Manalkadu dunes are spectacular and feel like a mini desert. It is not a protected wildlife reserve, so offroading is generally permitted, but you must stick to the established sandy tracks to avoid getting bogged down. There are incredible, completely secluded spots where the dunes meet the ocean, perfect for a private sunset party.

If you ask the local fishermen in the nearby village, you can sometimes buy fresh prawns right off their small boats to grill on the beach.

Check out the ruins of the old Dutch church half buried in the sand dunes nearby. It makes for an amazing, eerie backdrop for evening photos.

Bring all your supplies from Point Pedro town. Once you are in the dunes, there are absolutely no shops or facilities around.

The wind picks up heavily in the late afternoon. Bring a jacket or a windbreaker if you plan on staying past sunset drinking beers.

Make sure you deflate your tires a bit before hitting the deep sand. We got stuck for two hours last time and had to dig the jeep out by hand.
