Parakrama Samudra (the "Sea of Parakrama"), engineered by King Parakramabahu I in the 12th century, consolidated five distinct ancient reservoirs into a single 2,500-hectare inland sea. Its earthen embankment stretches 14 kilometers, rising over 12 meters high. To prevent large wind-driven lake waves from eroding the clay core, ancient engineers armored the water-facing slope with Ralapanawa (rip-rap stone pitching): interlocking dressed granite boulders laid in terraced tiers. The stepped stone facing absorbed and broke incoming wave crests without dislodging compacted clay underneath.
