Real but conditional. The shallow reefs off Pasikudah and nearby Kalkudah do host zebra sharks (often miscalled "leopard sharks" - they are nocturnal, docile, bottom-dwelling, harmless to snorkelers). Sightings are seasonal and not guaranteed: best March to October when waters are calm and clear, with peak in May to July. Honest sighting rate on a half-day snorkel: maybe 30-40 percent. Most reputable operators are upfront that sharks are "possible, not guaranteed". The reef itself is worth the trip regardless - decent coral, parrotfish, turtles, octopus, and the shallow gradient is beginner-snorkel friendly. Choose an operator with: (1) Small group (4-6 max), (2) Mask + fins + reef-safe sunscreen included, (3) "No chase, no touch" policy clearly stated. Reef around Pigeon Island marine park (further north near Trincomalee) is also great and includes reef sharks; consider both for a few days on the east coast.
Saw zebra shark on the second snorkel out of three. Calm, just gliding along the sand. Magical.
Avoid the "shark cage feed" type tours; not common here but if anyone offers one, decline. The Pasikudah reef ecosystem is healthy because it has NOT been baited or fed.
Booking Pasikudah plus Pigeon Island. No expectations, just hopes. Arigato!
