Ceylon pearl fishery was historically famous (early 20th century pearl banks off Mannar). Today: NO significant commercial pearl production. Pearls sold in Sri Lanka today are largely imported (Chinese freshwater, Filipino saltwater) — not authentic Ceylon pearls. Historical context only.

For a gem-heritage gift, buy sapphires (genuine Ceylon industry) rather than pearls. If specifically wanting pearls, buy from established international jewelers with clear origin certification — not local street/tourist market claims. Beware 'Ceylon pearl' marketing.
