When the First Randoli cortege is right in front of us, are locals OK with a dim phone torch, or should we switch it off. Not night-mode photography and not a flash-ban question.

Keep the torch off or pointed at your own feet when dancers and tuskers are in front. A bright beam into faces or animals is rude and distracting. Dim light for a quick bag check behind you is usually fine.

Kids love the light — agree the rule before the cortege arrives so you are not negotiating mid-pass.

If you need light to reunite, step back from the front line first.
