I am looking for the highland subspecies of the Purple faced Langur, often called the Bear Monkey. Are they easier to spot in the Hakgala Botanical Gardens or inside Horton Plains National Park.

Hakgala Botanical Gardens is by far the easiest place to photograph the Bear Monkey. They have a thick, shaggy coat to survive the cold mountain air. They frequently forage in the large trees right above the paved walking paths in the gardens, so you do not even need an extreme telephoto lens. In Horton Plains, they tend to stay deep in the cloud forest canopy and are much harder to spot.

Do not mistake them for the macaque monkeys that beg for food near the car park. The Bear Monkeys are shy, arboreal, and generally will not approach humans for snacks.

Definitely Hakgala! I got an amazing shot of a mother and baby there last week. Just go early in the morning before the park gets crowded with large tour groups.
