The lower trail passes an active Buddhist temple and ancient brick reclining Buddha; climbers must dress modestly (knees and shoulders covered, removing shoes at the temple courtyard) and maintain silence. Avoid shouting or using bright light beams against upper cliff crevices where giant Asian honeybees and hornets nest.
The final boulder crevice requires pulling your body weight up bare granite; wear grippy trail runners rather than flip-flops or smooth flat-soled sneakers.
Arrive at the summit by 5:20 AM to capture the silhouette of Sigiriya fortress against the magenta pre-dawn horizon before direct sunlight washes out the landscape.
