Pinnawala orphanage feeding show vs Udawalawe jeep — which feels less wrong for first-time visitors?

We have one elephant day. Partner booked Pinnawala because it is easy from Kandy. I keep reading that feeding shows and bathing queues are stressful for the animals, and that Udawalawe is wilder. We are not trying to be perfect — just less wrong. Worth the longer drive?

Different experiences. Pinnawala is a captive facility with viewing of bathing/feeding routines — convenient from the hill/Kandy side, crowded, and ethically debated by many travelers. Udawalawe is a national park jeep safari where you watch free-roaming herds from a distance; longer day if you are coming from Kandy, more dependent on luck and time of day, generally closer to what people mean by "wild." If your stomach turns at close-up feeding shows, switch to Udawalawe or another park and treat elephants as wildlife, not a photo queue. Book a reputable jeep, keep noise down, no feeding from the vehicle. Check current park ticket practice on arrival — I will not invent exact foreigner fees here.

From Habarana I send people to Minneriya/Kaudulla in season for wild gatherings. From the south, Udawalawe. Pinnawala is logistics, not the same thing.

Same "less wrong" conversation I hear at Sigiriya hotels. Distance viewing ages better in the memory.
