Sri Lanka banned single-use plastics in phases (2017-2024): polythene bags below 20 microns, sachets, styrofoam containers, plastic straws, plastic cutlery, and various packaging films. Enforcement is patchy but supermarket chains comply. Small shops still slip through with thin plastic bags.

Bring your own: reusable shopping bag, water bottle, cutlery. Refuse straws proactively. Some fresh markets still use banana leaves or paper — great to support. Tourism companies that clearly walk the talk (Cinnamon Hotels' plastic-free program) worth supporting.
