The Gal Vihara (Uttararama) in Polonnaruwa represents the zenith of 12th-century medieval Sinhala stone sculpture under King Parakramabahu I. Four colossal Buddha images are carved in high relief from a single 50-meter outcrop of high-grade charnockitic gneiss. Sculptors studied natural rock jointing planes to position each statue: a 7-meter seated Buddha inside a rock-cut shrine cave, a smaller seated meditation figure, a 7-meter standing figure with crossed arms, and a 14-meter reclining Buddha showing deep meditative serenity. The artists smoothed natural mineral color banding in the stone to accentuate cranial contours and robe drapery folds.
The reclining Buddha depicts the moment of Parinirvana, with the feet slightly offset to indicate uneven toe alignment symbolizing the final transition.
Charnockite gneiss provides exceptional structural stability, allowing unreinforced rock statues to endure monsoonal weathering for over 800 years.
Visitors must remove footwear and hats before stepping onto the white sand courtyard surrounding the rock sculptures; photography without flash is permitted.
