Rankoth Vehera (Golden Pinnacle Stupa) in Polonnaruwa, built in the late 12th century by King Nissanka Malla, is the fourth largest ancient stupa in Sri Lanka, standing 55 meters tall with a base circumference of 168 meters. Built entirely of millions of clay bricks bonded with hydraulic lime mortar, it emulates the early hemispherical architectural traditions of Ruwanwelisaya in Anuradhapura. Four brick image houses (Vahalkada) flank the cardinal points. Facing the eastern entrance stands a stone inscription seat where the king sat to supervise construction progress.
The circular sand courtyard terrace (Salapatala Maluwa) features subterranean stone brick drains engineered to clear torrential monsoon rainwater without foundation erosion.
Visitors must remove shoes and hats before stepping onto the brick terrace courtyard; carrying thick socks protects bare soles from afternoon heat.
