Rent bicycles (approx. 1,000-1,500 LKR daily) near the entrance museum after buying the Central Cultural Fund ticket (30 USD). Cycle northward along shaded park roads: start at the Royal Palace complex of King Parakramabahu I, proceed to the sacred Quadrangle (Vatadage, Hatadage, and Thuparama), continue past the towering Rankoth Vehera stupa, and conclude at Gal Vihara. At Gal Vihara, visitors must remove shoes and hats before entering the sand courtyard; never stand directly in front of the four rock-carved statues with your back to the images for portraits.
The archaeological park spans over 8 kilometers; cycling is far faster than walking and allows easy parking outside each fenced ruin precinct.
Carry at least 2 liters of water; shaded stalls selling fresh king coconuts are situated outside the main Quadrangle and Gal Vihara exits.
