The defining shift is the removal of the bull from the concentric procession. Anuradhapura moonstones feature four beasts (elephant, horse, lion, and bull) marching together in a single arc. Under Polonnaruwa’s Chola-influenced period, the bull was isolated and ultimately dropped from entry slabs stepped on by worshippers, due to Hindu reverence for Nandi. Polonnaruwa moonstones instead segregate the animals into discrete, single-species concentric rings.

The central lotus petal carving at Polonnaruwa is also more ornate and deeply undercut into hard granite, contrasting with the flatter relief carvings seen on early Anuradhapura limestone.

Midday stone temperatures at the Vatadage can blister bare feet; bring thick white socks to wear across the unshaded courtyard.

Walking onto these preserved moonstones wearing shoes is strictly forbidden; security officers issue immediate citations and will escort violators off the monument platforms.

Direct overhead architectural photography requires early morning light around 7:30 AM before harsh shadows obscure the concentric animal friezes.
