I am visiting the ancient Ritigala forest monastery. Is it permitted to bring a yoga mat and practice asanas on the lower stone platforms before the other tourists arrive.

No, this is strictly prohibited. Ritigala is a highly protected archaeological site and was home to the Pansukulika ascetic monks. The stone platforms are sacred ruins. You cannot roll out a yoga mat or perform physical exercises on them. However, you can sit quietly on the ground in the surrounding forest for silent meditation, which fits the ascetic spirit of the location perfectly.

It is incredibly serene at the base of the mountain near the old bathing pools. Just sitting there listening to the jungle birds is better than any physical yoga practice.

Always respect the local guidelines at these sites. The guards will immediately ask you to leave if you start doing downward dog on a 2000 year old meditation platform.
