Modest hand-holding acceptable in tourist zones (Colombo, Galle Fort, beach areas, Ella). Extended public kissing/making out is NOT acceptable anywhere. Rural areas and temples: even hand-holding may draw stares. Same-sex couples: same discretion applies as heterosexual couples in conservative areas.

Local couples themselves are discreet — Sri Lanka overall more conservative than European countries. Foreigners get some latitude in tourist zones but respectful discretion works best. Beach hotels/resorts fully accommodating within grounds.
