The endemic Purple-faced Langur (Semnopithecus vetulus) is an obligate arboreal folivore whose diet consists primarily of mature rainforest leaves rich in structural cellulose, lignin, and toxic secondary plant tannins. Unlike monogastric primates, langurs possess a specialized, enlarged, multi-chambered sacculated stomach analogous to ruminants. Anaerobic symbiotic bacteria in the foregut ferment cellulose and produce volatile fatty acids (VFAs) that provide metabolic energy. Special salivary proline-rich proteins bind and neutralize toxic dietary tannins before leaves enter the stomach, preventing protein precipitation.
