If you want to explore incredibly peaceful, ancient meditation caves, you absolutely must visit the Vessagiriya ruins. Located just south of the main Anuradhapura complex, this site features massive boulder formations where ancient ascetic monks carved out small meditation dwellings. It is completely free of the massive pilgrim crowds found at the main stupas. You can climb among the rocks, read the ancient Brahmi inscriptions etched above the cave entrances, and sit in total silence surrounded by nature.
