Sri Lanka has 5+ rambutan varieties. Best: MALWANA rambutan (yellow-red, sweetest, from Malwana village near Colombo — sometimes tagged 'Malwana premium'), REAP variety (dark red, standard), and the imported Malaysian types. Season May-September peaks.

Look for firm bristled fruit (not shriveled), snap open with thumbs, avoid pit (with fibrous jacket). Malwana village visits during peak season — direct-from-tree buying, unforgettable variety and price. Delicate to transport — eat locally.
