Everyone's been. Every photo looks the same. Is there something more to it or is it just a photo op that ruins your morning sleep?

Both, kind of. Photo op yes, but genuinely a beautiful spot even without the train. First train through is around 6:40am (verify - schedules shift). The 6am arrival is not just for photos - it's for the empty gorge, mist rising, birds, quiet. If you're a 'sunrise person' anyway, go. If you'd rather sleep, skip - the photos won't be worth the drag.

Walking into the gorge, that's the answer. Thanks!

Hot take: skip the crowded viewpoint and walk down INTO the gorge (path from the village). Way better angle, no tourists, and the train passes right above you. Requires 30 min walk each way. Almost nobody does it. Best kept secret in Ella.
