A relaxed, classic first-timer loop: Day 1 arrive, sleep near the airport (Negombo). Days 2 to 3 Cultural Triangle (Sigiriya/Pidurangala + Dambulla caves). Day 4 to 5 Kandy (Temple of the Tooth, a slower day). Day 6 take the famous Kandy to Ella train through the tea country (the scenic leg you want). Days 6 to 7 Ella (Little Adams Peak, Nine Arch Bridge). Day 8 drive south to the coast (Mirissa/Unawatuna). Days 8 to 9 beach + Galle Fort. Day 10 back to the airport. This minimises long drives, puts the big scenic train in the middle, and ends on the beach. The longest single transfer is Ella to the south.

Give Ella two nights, not one. People rush it and miss the whole laid-back point. Two nights lets you do the bridge at sunrise and the peak at sunset without stress.

This is exactly the balance I needed. Two nights in Ella, train in the middle, beach at the end. Thank you!

Hiring a driver-guide for the non-train legs was worth every rupee for us, way less stressful than self-driving and they handle the route and stops.

Late May, swap the south beach for the east (Arugam Bay) if you want sun, since the south gets the monsoon then. Same idea, different coast.
