Realistic daily backpacker budget for Sri Lanka in 2026

Sri Lanka is affordable but not dirt cheap, and prices rose with inflation. A frugal backpacker (dorm bed, local rice and curry, buses and 2nd/3rd class trains, few paid attractions) can manage on roughly 25 to 40 USD a day. A comfortable mid-range style (private guesthouse room, mix of local and cafe meals, occasional driver, a couple of park/site tickets) runs more like 60 to 100 USD a day. The budget-killers are the foreigner entry tickets (Sigiriya ~30 USD, national park safaris with jeep and entry can be 60 to 100 USD), so spread those out. Local food and transport stay genuinely cheap.
Budget extra for the big-ticket experiences you really want (a safari, the whale boat, Sigiriya) and economise on the in-between days. That balanced approach worked great for me.
Perfect, budgeting around 35 a day plus a separate pot for the big tickets. Thank you!
A rice and curry packet (lunch packet) from a local shop is often just a couple of dollars and huge. Eating local is where you save the most.
