Red-Yellow Latosols (Rhodustalfs / Oxisols) covering the dry-zone peneplains of Sri Lanka (such as Anuradhapura, Hambantota, and Puttalam) are the product of intense tropical weathering acting over millions of years on underlying gneissic and charnockitic basement rock. High seasonal temperatures and alternate wet-dry leaching cycles drive complete desilication: mobile silica and alkaline earth bases (Ca, Mg, Na, K) are leached out, leaving behind residual accumulation of stable 1:1 clay minerals (kaolinite) and hydrous iron and aluminum oxides (sesquioxides: hematite and goethite). Hematite gives these soils their characteristic deep red coloration, while goethite dominates yellower profiles.
