Simple rules: TEMPLES (Buddhist + Hindu) — shoes ALWAYS off before entering the compound/enclosed area (not just the sanctum). HOMES — shoes off inside almost universally. Look for shoe pile at door. SHOPS — shoes off only at fabric/textile stores, some traditional Ayurvedic shops, and mosque-adjacent stalls.

Practical tip: wear slip-ons throughout Sri Lanka — you'll thank yourself. Socks essential for sunlit stupas where paving stones burn feet. Some temples have shoe attendants (5-20 LKR tip). Don't leave brand-name shoes unattended at busy shrines (very rare thefts but happen).
