I am doing a wellness trip. Can I ask a local homestay host to prepare meals without oil or heavy spices, following a basic Ayurvedic detox diet.

Yes, but you have to be very specific. Traditional Sri Lankan food is heavily reliant on coconut oil, coconut milk, and roasted spices. If you want a plain detox diet, ask them for simple boiled vegetables (like pumpkin or beans) and Kola Kenda (herbal leaf porridge). They are incredibly accommodating, but you must request it the day before so they know not to add the heavy coconut milk.

The herbal porridge is amazing for digestion. They usually serve it with a tiny piece of jaggery (palm sugar) to bite into.

If you want a strict medical diet, it is much easier to just book an actual Ayurvedic retreat center rather than burdening a homestay mother.
