I want to see real traditional fishing happening. Where and how can I do this respectfully?

Early morning on many beaches (especially less touristy ones on the east coast and south of main surf areas) you can still see traditional methods in use. Go very early, stay at a respectful distance, and don't interfere. Some fishing villages are accustomed to quiet early morning visitors. Buying fish directly when appropriate can be a positive interaction. The key is being unobtrusive and respectful of their work and space. Many fishermen are happy to briefly explain what they're doing if approached with genuine interest and a local who can help communicate.

The real thing happens at dawn. Later in the day, what you see is often more for visitors than actual fishing.
